OPINION | 50+ Days In Office

By Hermès Falcon

The only thing worse than old men taking up Presidency every four years is other old men following in their footsteps. What’s even worse is having an old man who doesn’t keep his promises as President. President Joseph Biden has been in office for exactly 71 days now, and the promises he made the American people have been seemingly put on the backburner.

Biden quickly rose to popularity when all the other Democratic nominees for the 2020 election dropped out, but for the wrong reasons. Many decided to simply “settle” for him instead of Trump— a slightly less racist man representing the U.S. is better than a blatantly racist one. Instead of Bernie Sanders, who many Democrats and liberal millennials and Gen-Z kids seemed to side with, a modernist has taken the stage.

Bad news is that the last thing society needs at this time is a modern-labeled individual willing to be pushed around.

Biden supported the Equality Act, a seemingly innocent thing to do, until he decided to bomb Syria just days later — a not so innocent move. Biden has a nasty looking past, one filled with racist comments and events he let slip by for the sake of his public figure. He supported bills fighting against LGBTQ+ and POC rights, and has a history of flip-flopping sides whenever convenient. What America needs right now is an individual who is certain of what they are fighting for.

Unfortunately for Trump supporters, this does not mean Trump deserved four more years in office. What this does mean is that there is still a long way to go before America gets to see a President that truly serves the people instead of their image.

Even now, when the Equality Act passed three years after the bill died as a proposed legislation back in 2019, many states and governors strongly fight to repress LGBTQ+ rights. March 2nd, several Republicans presented an act that would ban transgender woman from participating in girls sports in a K-12 level. This is a clear attack against the Equality Act, and the fact that Biden has not brought attention to this is shocking.

America is even still facing issues with harassment against women— high sexual assault rates, and no one to trust —so to have high expectations for President Biden would only end up in disappointment. If we can’t even listen to the demands of white women, then people of color have no hope.

The campaign of “settling for Biden” was a strong movement, but now those who put this man in office must hold him accountable. He might not be the man that brings total change, but the very least that the American people can do is hold him up to his word.
