How Mariah Carey Became One of the Faces of Christmas

By Ajmaanie Andre

It’s not Christmas until the familiar tune of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is playing on every radio station until Christmas Day.

All I Want for Christmas Is You” originally released back in 1994, alongside many other timeless classics such as “O Holy Night” and “Silent Night,” on Mariah Carey’s Christmas album titled “Merry Christmas“.

The song seems to take all that is great about the holiday season and tie it with a big high note hitting ribbon called Mariah Carey. From the cheerful singing and jingle bells ringing to decking the halls and hitting up shopping malls, the holiday season is as joyful as it is hectic and filled with so much glee.

What makes Mariah Carey so special is not only her angelic voice — but the passion and charisma that she carries into her music. In the case of her Christmas songs, Carey’s music is able to deliver the same sort of good feeling rhythm that is reminiscent of some legends such as Judy Garland and Nat King Cole who stole the hearts of many with well known Christmas songs such as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Christmas Song”, respectively. These songs have ingrained themselves as essentials to the Christmas season and “All I Want for Christmas is You” is not too far behind.

For many years, the track would continuously make a reassurance on the charts and the chart would go on to eventually hit number one on the Billboard in December of 2019.

After the never-ending year that was 2020 that seemed to be packing punch after punch of new disaster and despair, a song about wanting to spend Christmas with the ones you love is essential to lifting up the cloud of sadness that seemed to cling to everyone throughout the year.

With jaw-dropping vocals and lyrics that seem to touch even the darkest of hearts— Mariah Carey has reserved a special place in the pop-culture consciousness.
