Online Shopping: Retailers vs Amazon

By Sofia Palomino

Amazon has truly taken over the world — and it certainly might as well be an empire. However, there are still some retailers that are doing everything they can to compete against the company.

Last week, Amazon hosted its annual Prime Day deals event. Third-party sellers gained more than $3.5 billion this year, making it a success all around. For the upcoming seasons, they plan on having their Holiday Dash that many people eagerly anticipate scoring the best deals.

The two-day event of Amazon was pushed back from July to October. This had given way to the start of the holiday season for 2020, which is expected to be very different from the previous years.

To compete with Amazon’s deals, other stores like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy chimed in with their sales and events this past week that offered discounts on clothes, toys, electronics, and more.

During October 13th and 14th, Target held its deal days and will continue to have sales throughout December. Customers had the option of utilizing Target’s Drive up and Order Pickup to have their items in less than an hour for their convenience.

Although some people still want to shop in person, many are concerned with the health risks that are present in the stores with the number of people that will be searching for the hot new deals.

Another retail store that launched sales last week was Walmart. They recently announced their new and renovated Black Friday Deals for Days that will consist of three separate days with major discounts.

They have extended these days throughout November to accommodate customer needs and relieve Black Friday from its famous crowds. The event will start online on November 4th, 11th, and 25th, followed by sales in the stores for the people that still plan on shopping in person. They will also provide free curbside pick up for those who need their orders the same day.

For many stores to go head to head with Amazon and their prices, they will have to incorporate new marketing strategies to promote their products. This means gathering as much information on their clients and their interests for this season. Then they can come up with engaging and more directed advertisements.

The key to surviving among Amazon is for the retailers to retarget their existing customers by creating dynamic ads to improve their interests in their products. They can also use behavior data from their websites and sales to attract new clients.

While Amazon already provides tempting offers on a variety of products people don’t necessarily have to purchase the items they are looking for from them. Instead, they can buy it at other companies such as Bed Bath and Beyond or Target that have accepted prices matching their competitors’ prices to appeal to their clients. In doing so, these retailers have been able to sustain their companies and brought more attention to their products since they are working towards the customer’s interest and providing the best experience.

The transition from the malls and stores to websites became more evident in the past two decades and has become ingrained into our lifestyle as of 2020. This year has mostly been virtual and as we approach the holiday season there will be many families trying to find the perfect presents for one another. Amazon remains on top as it has been dominating online shopping for several years now but there have been many companies that have stepped up to their challenge.

The retailers have recognized this new era of shopping and shifted their efforts to their online websites. For the special occasions that are coming up in the next couple of weeks, there will be hundreds of sales from most of these companies. This holiday season will be a different experience for everyone but be sure to look for the best deals on the store’s websites.
